My father (a Hokie) is in the same boat and our experiences are similar.

Dad had a stroke about 2.5 years ago, and the mental capacity has diminished significantly. While this may initially sound bad, he is pleasant to be around. Dad is very attached to his home and does not wander off. He sleeps through the night - so there are no night time wandering issues. This has enabled us to have daytime sitters, who clean, prep food, and watch over him. They also ensure he gets his meds. The sitters are low paid, and not the sharpest tools in the shed.

My parents had LT health care insurance, which is good for another 3.5 years. When my mom passed, her benefit carried over to dad. We get ~$4,500 / month back in claims. We pay about ~$6,000 / month for sitters.

If he needs 24/7 care, we anticipate costs of over $140k per year. Yeah, it is crazy expensive. If it gets to that point, assisted living facilities are slightly cheaper, and we would move him. Luckily, he shouldn't outlive his savings.

I would say, even if you had him at an assisted living center or at home, your family will always be heavily involved in his care (he will always need an advocate.)

I would suggest getting a security camera where you can monitor all his activities.

One last thing - I would consider gathering personal property with any value and removing it from the property. We have heard that sometimes sitters will have sticky fingers.

Good luck & prayers for you and your family.
